Is American Century Global Growth Investor (TWGGX) a Strong Mutual Fund Pick Right Now?

If you have been looking for Global – Equity funds, it would not be wise to start your search with American Century Global Growth Investor (TWGGX). TWGGX holds a Zacks Mutual Fund Rank of 5 (Strong Sell), which is based on various forecasting factors like size, cost, and past performance.

Zacks categorizes TWGGX as Global – Equity, which is a segment packed with options. Global – Equity mutual funds invest in large markets like the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and operate with very few geographical limitations. They also provide an investment technique that leverages the diverse nature of the global economy in the hopes of providing a stable return.

American Century is responsible for TWGGX, and the company is based out of Kansas City, MO. The American Century Global Growth Investor made its debut in December of 1998 and TWGGX has managed to accumulate roughly $420.66 million in assets, as of the most recently available information. A team of investment professionals is the fund’s current manager.

Of course, investors look for strong performance in funds. This fund in particular has delivered a 5-year annualized total return of 10.11%, and is in the middle third among its category peers. Investors who prefer analyzing shorter time frames should look at its 3-year annualized total return of 3.71%, which places it in the bottom third during this time-frame.

It is important to note that the product’s returns may not reflect all its expenses. Any fees not reflected would lower the returns. Total returns do not reflect the fund’s [%] sale charge. If sales charges were included, total returns would have been lower.

When looking at a fund’s performance, it is also important to note the standard deviation of the returns. The lower the standard deviation, the less volatility the fund experiences. Over the past three years, TWGGX’s standard deviation comes in at 17.76%, compared to the category average of 14.76%. The fund’s standard deviation over the past 5 years is 18.26% compared to the category average of 15.74%. This makes the fund more volatile than its peers over the past half-decade.

Investors should note that the fund has a 5-year beta of 0.96, so it is likely going to be less volatile than the market at large. Because alpha represents a portfolio’s performance on a risk-adjusted basis relative to a benchmark, which is the S&P 500 in this case, one should pay attention to this metric as well. Over the past 5 years, the fund has a negative alpha of -4.31. This means that managers in this portfolio find it difficult to pick securities that generate better-than-benchmark returns.
